December 2007

I have never kept my new year resolutions. I could write a 3-pager resolution and ‘refining’ it every few days (for the next 365 days) and yet I just can’t figure out what is a resolution!!

Today is the last day of 2007… kind of mellow… kind of “I-should-have-blah-blah-blah this year” day… then lightning struck… no no not at me – I didn’t tell that much lies this year… I mean Kuching having another rainy day. I’m being coop up so I thought I should seriously write down one item that I need and have to accomplish by 31 Dec 08… not easy for part-time procrastinator! (daydreamer the other half time). This is what I came up with :

 $$

Ha! Don’t get me wrong here..I’m not $$ face. Someone gave me this and at first I took it as an insult then slowly (I’m also slow the other half time) this cute l’tle yellow thingy could remind me to start putting aside my future ’nursing home’ expenses instead of spending more than I could earn now.

So..hey anyone interested in buying this cute ornament off me??? ;-)

HAPPY NEW YEAR FOLKS!

King of all fruit – If I may say so myself. Durians…some like it, some will faint, some say it tastes like heaven, some say it smell like your old sneakers. Gees… even the king can’t pleases everyone!! Anyway, it’s the durian season again (twice in a year) – I was told that a good durian tree (obviously bears the best fruit) only comes in season once a year. I wonder if that’s true but I have to say… I’m very particular about durian. I only eat durian that has a bitter after taste!!! burp!

There are other ways to eat a durian if you don’t like to eat it from the husk. There are the durian cake (durian dol-dol), durian ice-cream, durian sponge cake, durian chips, etc etc. I have a recipe here some of you might like to try… remove durian fresh from the stone, season fresh with a bit of salt, put aside. Fried till crispy some anchovies (ikan bilis), add in cut green chillies, add in the durian fresh, stir-fry until you smell paradise…. Wah lah you’ll have tempoyak! burp!

This is for you Nicole… make sure you come during durian season next time!!! :) durian

This is the newest shopping mall in Kuching. Located at 4 1/2 mile Penrissen Road. I was there this afternoon to check things out. It housed a big supermarket, food outlets, departmental stores, pharmacies, bookstores, you name it. Definitely a place to chill out (the aircon is cold!!!) when all stores are in full swing.

I found out too there’s a new food court just across from Boulevard, “Food Avenue”. It came into business on 2nd December with drums and lion dance performances. It’s a nice cosy place with sliding roof to keep the rain out and cool air in whichever is appropriate. It has various stalls selling from yam rice to kolo-mee (you’ll find kolo-mee everywhere in Kuching!!), homemade kuih (cakes), chicken rice, mee siam, etc etc.

Cheers Kuching – more places for me to hang out! :)

With rain everyday, I hope friends throughout Sarawak will be more careful on the roads – I saw two accidents in one day and more reports in the newspaper. Don’t try to be stuntmen – your loved ones are waiting for you at home! If not, I’m here and I care.

LAKSA!!!!!!! – Sarawak’s favourite bowl of yummy vermecilli, spicy soup (prawn base + coconut milk), omelette, bean sprout, prawns, coriander leaf and lime (for that tangy flavour) for breakfast, lunch or dinner.

Another Sarawak’s famous bowl of curly noodles – eaten dry, that’s what the word ‘kolo’ means. Lots of flavour – garnish with ‘cha siew’ (barbeque pork), minced meat, spring onion, some vegie and of course you have the choice of mixing the ‘cha siew’ red oil or just plain. Then eat it with the pickled chilli.

YUMMMYYYYYYY!!! bon appetit!!! – I’m heading out for my LAKSA!!
