March 2008

While some anglers were fishing off the channel of Miri, here in Kuching it was an indoor activity at Boulevard.

The carnival was organized by ASTRO (cable tv) for people of all ages. There were the games for kids, singing competition, dancing, etc to entertain the crowd.

!BURP!… sumimasen!

A friend call me up this morning and asked if I would like to go fishing with them. I decided to meet up with them at the location but a bit later in the day. At 2 pm I arrived at the place and they had been there since 10 or 11 am but caught like 2 fish and a small crab.

Anyway, they told me that there was a fishing competition that morning and I missed it, or well, I do need my beauty sleep. I took some photos until my camera ran out of battery.

Pic 1 : Some people still fishing in the distant. This location have always been a fishing ground for anglers due to the deep channel and its construction which was built further into the sea.

There was a religious parade in Kuching tonight. The parade started from a temple at Wayang Street (next to STAR cineplex) ran through Ban Hock Road, then turned into Padungan Road and back again to Wayang Street.

I got stuck in a traffic jam on the way downtown and by the time I got to Ban Hock Road I only managed to take the end of the parade. However I was told that the end is usually the most important because the gods of the temple walked last.

There were two reasons, I was explained, the purpose of this parade. One was the gods of the temple will go out to the streets once a year, sort of like taking a leisure ride. The other reason was that the gods ’clean up’ bad spirits along the roads it passes.

Whatever the reasons I think it got a lot of people lined along the roadside even though it was drizzling. And I must say a lot of effort has been put in to organise this parade. There were dragon dances, lion dances, Chinese opera singers, etc etc..

Look at what I had for dessert today… kedongdong with chilli flakes!

kedongdong

It was sweet, sour and spicy!!! Want some?????

Okay okay… someone wrote in to say junk food made in China could contained high ‘toxicity’. Then how about made in Kuching junk food?

Do you remember kedongdong? They called it merdongdong in Indonesia, or pagsahingin in Philippines. Whatever the name people called it… kedongdong is sour!!! Here in this picture it’s preserved in sugar and liquorice powder/root mixture liquid. You can eat it like just like that or my way is to put soy sauce with sugar. The fresh kedongdong can be pounded with belacan (shrimp paste + chilli) and eat with plain rice…. Oooooola-la….so delicious!! Nowadays you can even find kedongdong juice in coffee-shops (kopitiam) … yummmieeee…
