You are right, both dishes, assam laksa and assam fish uses fish as the main ingredient.
The difference is that they are taken differently. As an individual dish, assam laksa has got noodles/pasta in it. Whereas assam fish is eaten with rice and other accompaniments. Both dishes gives a distinctive sour taste.

Yeah, just use the same shrimp paste you have in Vietnamese cooking. Let me know how it goes!

Mysarawak,

We have shrimp paste in Vietnamese cooking, too, but from the pictures, it didn’t look the same. I might have to run out to Chinatown Manhattan to find it. Maybe you should just be an angel and send me some of your homemade shrimp paste. Thanks! I’ll be updating my progress soon.

Hi Ms Sunshine,

You should look for ’shrimp paste’ in Chinatown or any Asian stores. Thai stores should carry this too coz they use shrimp paste in their cooking.

Shrimp ‘paste’ is not exactly a paste but a block – it’s solid. The texture should look like the one in my blog here. My shrimp paste/block came in odd shape and size coz it was homemade.

I found your page from google when I was searching for a good assam laksa recipe. I understood your recipe thoroughly, except I don’t know where to find belacan? Would any Asian store carry it? Or do I have to make a few hops to find this one ingredient? =)I googled it and found some images on the web, though still, I am not sure what I am looking for…

Your assam laksa looks so good! I hope to successfully make the dish to savor at home later.

Is it that bad? I contacted met.gov.my some time ago, and they sad monsoon won’t be so strong this year.

I agree with Andrew that dabai and kembayau are two different fruits. Dabai is quite commonplace in the upper Rejang, especially Kapit area. Kembayau is mostly found in the jungle. Dabai fruits are different in taste and some are more fleshy than the other. Kembayau offer a slightly different taste, a lit bit more sweetish and the skin is harder than that of dabai. No reference needed, as I am a hunter who use to encounter kembayau trees in the jungle. Anyway kembayau is fast becoming scarce because of logging activites. Thanks.

I haven’t checked our library if they have a copy. Actually it comes in a set of 16 volumes (all pictures!) I was told by the sole distributor. Unfortunately, they neither distributing it nor printing the set anymore

So anyone of you out there who has this book or the set of it, please please share with us!

my fiance is a sarawakian,and when i went to kuching to visit him last july, me and my sis stayed in tune hotel..i just simply love it!
-very clean room (checked)
-power shower (checked)
-in the middle of kuching town (checked)
-the best part, i got it for only rm18! (checked)

That’s a good mooncake story.
Carpenter street this year the atmosphere are not as good as last year, and the temple are renovating, so less lantern can be seen this year. Hope next year will be a blast!

Hi CK,

The summer house is located on the same compound as Sarawak Museum (old building) – actually it’s behind Sarawak Museum.

Once upon a time, the summer house was full of people on weekends. And there were even bands playing on the bandstand next to the summer house. Now the good ol’ days are gone.

siniawan…every old folks bidayuh in my village knows siniawan..during those old days where money was rare n trading was still practiced,my grandparents come all d way to siniawan juz to trade rice with salt,50 cents queen elizabeth money,they can buy so many groceries n clothing stuff..hurm…
