As a kid growing up in Kuching I had wondered were there princes and princesses living in those castles across the river? – There were plenty of frogs no doubt… but a prince???

These buildings as we see here are remnant of the past and the history went back to the days when the white Rajahs ruled this land.

Astana was Charles Brooke’s white fortress built in 1870 and it was the first brick building in Kuching.


Fort Margherita was built in 1879 and was named after Ranee Margaret (Charles Brooke’s wife).

This Square Tower was built as a dungeon and fort but was used as dance hall in 1920s.
